157 Main Street, Norwalk CT
And 14 locations in Connecticut
Today, we started off with Plan A, which was to go try Saugatuck Craft Butchery for breakfast which we have heard is REALLY amazing. But, they did not have the cafe open today. So, we’ll have to try that out in our next post. They were super nice, and did give me a peek at their meat locker, so – stay tuned – it’s going to be a good post.
Since we didn’t have much time to come up with a Plan B, because we are going to New York City today, we needed somewhere close and fast so we chose Connecticut’s own Duchess! But guess what?!? We got there and the restaurant was closed for renovations. Lucky for us, the Drive-Thru was open. So today it’s a Sunday Diners Drive Thru Special!
Duchess is a chain of restaurants, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a junky fast food place – Duchess’ motto is Fresh Food Served Fast – so it’s like a cross between a diner and a fast food restaurant. … and I’m happy to tell you that their motto is true!
Today I ordered a Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich, Home Fries and a Chocolate Milk. As regular readers know, I take my egg sandwiches very seriously and Duchess does too. The eggs were fresh real eggs (not fake eggs from a carton) and they were cooked perfectly (not over cooked), the bacon was crispy and tasty, the cheese was creamy and it was served on fresh kaiser roll. The home fry patty was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The chocolate milk was from Guida’s, a local dairy.
It’s hard to interview someone, especially when you are in a car… through a drive-thru window and there’s a couple of people behind you… but I was able to speak with José, the Assistant Manager and asked him:
What is your favorite thing on the menu?
He said, “My favorite thing is the Chicken Sandwich”
Then he gave us our drinks and change :).
If you’re looking for something quick and good, definitely try Duchess.
