The Smith

1900 Broadway, New York, New York

This weekend, my dad and I went to New York City.  While we were there we visited the The Intrepid Museum, stopped at my dad’s office and saw our friend Kendah, who was visiting from Paris.  But first, we were hungry and needed somewhere close by and good to try, so we decided to eat at The Smith.  My dad had eaten there before and said it was good.

The Smith serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and it’s very hip!

It was 11:30 and I was pretty hungry so I decided instead of the brunch menu, it was time to order from the lunch menu.  Here’s what I had:

A Burger with Bacon, Cheddar, Special Sauce and the Works with Fries

It was delicious and it was BIG!  I was amazed that I could finish it.  The Fries were golden and crispy.

Thanks Tina for being our server, and for being SO nice… we’ll be back soon!

PS: At the Intrepid Museum we took a tour of The USS Growler Submarine. It was really cool to see what life was like under the sea.  But, if the Growler was a Sunday Diners restaurant, I’d give the bathroom zero stars! Luckily, it’s just part of the exhibit. 🙂

All the way from Idaho, Java Coffee & Café is the new cool place for breakfast in Westport, and it’s more than just coffee.  The first thing that you notice when you walk into Java is how fun it looks.  The place is decorated with lots of cool things like old toy robots and art.  There is an open kitchen and lots of seating.  If you want to sit outside, you can even bring your dog!  It’s a very rock and roll kind of place, the bathroom has rock posters for concerts and they play cool music.

… And of course, the food is REALLY good!

Here’s what we had…

I started off with…

A slice of Paleo Banana Bread and a Mexican Hot Cocoa

Paleo is a type of diet that has no grain or sugar. The Banana Bread was made from Eggs, Coconut, Banana and Chocolate.  It was really chewy and good.  But the Mexican Hot Cocoa was Muy Delicioso It was almost as good as what I had in Mexico.  It was topped off with a spoonful of their homemade whipped cream.

Java Benedict

The Java Benedict is Poached Eggs over an Everything Bagel with Smoked Ham and Hollandaise Sauce.  I had mine with a side of bacon… ’cause that’s just who I am 🙂 I loved it and the eggs were totally fresh… which we found out all about later.

Dad had… Scrambled Eggs and Bacon on an Everything Bagel

IMG_3301I spoke with the owner, Brad Berk and the manager Breanna Brandon (who is from Boise, Idaho where she managed Java Coffee and Café there) and asked…

What’s your favorite thing on the menu?

Brad likes the Poached Eggs and Avocado Toast.  For lunch he likes the Kale and Quinoa Salad.

Breanna likes… guess what?                         The Poached Eggs and Avocado Toast.

IMG_3299I asked Brad about their eggs and why they taste so good…

“They are local Connecticut farm-fresh eggs that we buy from The Farmer’s Cow the chickens are fed a good diet and aren’t given any hormones and the eggs are really fresh.

When we first started, because we make a lot of eggs, our supplier told us to buy these other eggs that were not local. They were a little cheaper… but they tasted terrible. These taste really great”.

I also asked Mr. Berk about why there’s Cap’n Crunch on the menu…

“That’s really for the kids, but it’a also kind of an inside joke for us… it’s fun!”

We’ll have to come back and find out more about that!

Breanna also let me try more of their fresh whipped cream… It was SO good!

Kings Breakfast & Lunch

265 S. Main St., Route 25, Newtown, CT 06470

King’s Restaurant’s motto is; “King’s, where your family is treated like royalty”, and today,  we learned that motto is definitely true.

King’s has a country log cabin theme that makes you feel warm and cozy.  It is a real family place with lots of kids eating there today.  The walls were decorated with hearts that children drew and wrote messages to honor the victims of Sandy Hook which is right up the road from King’s.

I know that King’ is famous for their pancakes, waffles and French Toast.  But today I wanted to try something totally different.  One of their specialty omelets…

The Philly Cheesesteak Omelet

The Philly Cheesesteak omelet is exactly that… an omelet stuffed with thinly sliced steak, onions topped with melted cheese.  It also came with  Home Fries and a delicious toast that we will get to soon…  I also had a Hot Chocolate, which was served at the perfect temperature.

I spoke with Nick the owner of King’s Restaurant, who has owned it for a year and a half and asked him, about the special toast… and his favorite breakfast.

“It’s called Bocco, and it’s made from pizza dough, seasoned with our special seasoning” “My favorite breakfast is the Henhouse, which is eggs, chicken

sausage and home fries with a biscuit”.

I also spoke to our server Katie who likes The Asparagus Benny… Eggs Benedict with Asparagus.

One thing to remember about King’s… is bring your appetite, because their portions are VERY big, in fact… their KING SIZE!!!!

Welcome back to Sunday Diners – we’ve been really busy this summer and we have a lot of ketchup (get it) to do!

Today, we visited one of the best hot dog places in the country!  Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield.  They have been written about in the New York Times, and in many magazines AND have even been featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

Super Duper Weenie has two parts… the kitchen and counter (where you order) that has some bar-style seating… and a dining area with long tables where everyone gets to sit together… with this guy watching over you:

At Super Duper Weenie, you can have your dog with your choice of condiments… OR you could have one of their specialty hot dogs. Today, dad and I decided to have two of their specialty dogs…

IMG-20130819-00578The Chicagoan

Topped with Lettuce, Tomato, Mustard, Celery Salt, Hot Relish and Pickle

IMG-20130819-00579The Georgia Red Hot

Spicy Southern Sausage with Sauerkraut, Mustard and Homemade Sweet Relish

The dogs were juicy and had a good crunch when you bit into them. Super Duper Weenie makes all of their own relishes and toppings… so they’re really good and fresh.  It’s also very interesting that there are all sorts of different ways that people eat their hot dogs around the country – Super Duper Weenie even has hot dogs on the menu that are made in the style of New York, California, New England and even Cincinnati!

We also shared some Fries and I had a Black & White. The fries were amazing, and soon we learned why.

IMG-20130819-00583I spoke to Gary Zemola, one of the owners and our chef today about why his fries are so good.

He told me that, “We get the potatoes from a special farm in Massachusetts that grows them for us exclusively… it’s a type of potato that is also used in Lay’s potato chips that is called a Norwiss”

I also asked Mr. Zemola what his favorite Weenie was…

“That’s really easy… The New Englander is my favorite… Sauerkraut, Bacon, Mustard, Sweet Relish, and Raw Onion… you get everything… the hot, the sweet, the salty and the crunch!”

Super Duper Weenie also does catering… where they can bring their Super Weenie Truck to your party! Today I met a couple who had the Super Duper Weenie Truck cater their wedding! Maybe one day, we can have them come for my birthday (hint hint).

Thanks Haley, Nick and Mr. Gary!  We’ll be back for burgers soon they look awesome too!

Adorably delicious brunch with Alex from Sunday Diners! Volta, Stamford

Here’s OMNOMCT’s amazing post about our epic brunch at VOLTA together!

If you haven’t been following the exciting eating adventures of Alex from Sunday Diners, you’re seriously missing out. Oh, did we mention that he’s just 10 years old?  Yep! He and his dad, James, hit up Connecticut diners and breakfast spots and write about the food, the people,  the experience, and, oh, the bathrooms…but more on that later. Always a fun read, we love seeing where “the boys” (James is a kid at heart) have gone. And, lucky ducky us got to sit in on one of their dining extravanganzas at Volta in Stamford with mom / wife Ann who runs the increasingly popular Fairfieldista. Here’s our adventure…and here’s his on Sunday Diners.

We got settled in to our table and enjoyed some nice Sunday morning conversation about the weather, places we’ve traveled, and restaurants we want to try. But soon we moved on from  the small…

Today’s Sunday Diners is a very special first for us!  Last Sunday, we got to do two very exciting things, we got to try out VOLTA in Stamford which makes awesome crêpes and gelato…  and best of all, we went there with our two favorite bloggers OMNOMCT’s Kristien and Dan Del Ferraro

Before we talk about VOLTA, here’s a little bit about OMNOMCT.  OMNOM is an award-winning blog about food and restaurants in CT.  It’s really fun — definitely check out their story on eating A Burger a Day For The Whole Month Of May!  Now THAT’s a commitment! Dan and Kristien, have been big fans of Sunday Diners since we have started. They always comment on our posts, sometimes they tweet about us and always have great suggestions about new places to try.  They’re also very good people!

Dan and Kristien thought that it would be fun if we blogged together about a place  – and they suggested VOLTA – which they have been to before and liked a lot.  We’ve been waiting to do this for over a year… and on this Sunday here we are!

VOLTA is modern looking space which reminds me of when I was in Europe.  They play cool music and there are pictures on the walls of Italy — like statues, a Fiat, and scooters. The first thing that you notice when walk in is the HUGE selection of Gelato!  I was thinking… I’m definitely having some of that later!

VOLTA is not only a Gelateria, but also a Creperia AND a Juice Bar! So, to start I had a Fresh Carrot-Orange Juice.  It was so fresh and orange, I thought that I would turn into a carrot. Dan and Kristien and my parents all had cappuccino… I got to try the foam which was extra foamy.

Then it was time for the main course. Dan, Kristien, my Mom and I had Crêpes!  Kristien had Goat Cheese, Egg Sunny Side Up, Mixed Greens, Mushrooms and Spinach. My Mom had Black Forest Ham and Swiss Cheese, Dan had the Prosciutto, Scrambled Egg, Mozzarella Cheese and Mixed Greens.  Want to guess what I had? I had the Nutella Crêpe with a side of Applewood Smoked Bacon. Dad, had a Croissant with Eggs, Cheese and Bacon… I guess he wasn’t in a Crêpe-y mood today! 🙂

My Nutella Crêpe was delicious, the bacon was crispy and thick — and everyone LOVED their brunch choices.  Now that we ate, I interviewed OMNOMCT and they interviewed me. Be sure to check them out today… they had some pretty crazy questions for me!

I asked Dan how OMNOMCT got started.

“Kristien and I go out to eat a lot, and when we did, we always were telling our friends online about the places we went to. Soon, our friends were starting to think that we went out to eat ALL of the time!

So, Kristien and I decided why don’t we share the places we go to with other people to, so we started OMNOM.”

IMG-20130519-01508I asked Kristien, “What is her favorite dish at VOLTA?”

She said, “What I had today, the Goat Cheese Crepe – I love Goat Cheese and it’s extremely healthy!”

Kristien is very nice, she works in advertising, so we talked a little about my advertising project at school  and she gave me some good tips.  Then I showed her some funny dog videos on youtube because she loves pets!

So with our interviews done… it was time for Gelato!  VOLTA, makes their own Gelato, and it’s awesome.

I had Dulce De Leche, Lemon, and Mint Chocolate — Dan had Salted Caramel and Dad had Nutella.

I asked Santiago, our server, what his favorite gelato flavor is

He loves the “Gianduia” which is a Chocolate Hazelnut flavor.

Thank you so much Dan and Kristien for such a great experience, we hope that we can see you again soon… How about we grab Burgers!?!
